If you’re travelling in India then you’ve inevitably tried the famous lassi, if you’re yet to go then make sure you grab one at your first opportunity; they can be found mostly from the lassi-wallahs on the streets and the traditional ones come in big terracotta cups. They’re available all over India but different regions are famous for different flavours like the Makhaniya Lassi in Jodhpur. In Varanasi, however, one small lassi shop has earned its fame by testing new flavours and mixing old flavours together – Blue Lassi is THE place to get the best lassi’s around!
Situated in the old city, down some very small alleys leading to Manikarnika Ghat, Blue Lassi can be tricky to find but its worth the wait. You’ll know once you’ve arrived as you step into a small room where the walls are lined with passport photos and creepy eyes staring back at you and the shop itself is full of well….tourists! Pull up a pew, preferably under the fan, and grab one of the huge menus.
The menu is divided into flavours with everything from banana to blueberry and mango to mixed fruits each with added toppings like chocolate, pomegranate or coconut.
They all sound absolutely delicious so its really hard to choose but with mango being our favourite we went for the mango, coconut and chocolate (80Rs) and the mixed fruit lassi (100 Rs) to get a bit of all the flavours!
The lassi wallah sits right in the window and whips up the lassi’s from scratch, serving them in their traditional pots to all the eagerly awaiting eyes behind him.
And well, they don’t disappoint! Blue lassi’s were the easily some of the creamiest lassi’s we’d tried and the alternative flavours really worked a treat – especially the chocolate shavings!!
Its a cool place to hang out, see if you can spot any friends on the walls and try these delicious lassi’s for pretty cheap! Get yourselves down there!!
