Star Anise Boutique Capsules
When we first saw Star Anise Boutique Capsules we were intrigued; capsule hotels always throw up the image of Japan where the tiny capsules are stacked row upon row and it all seems a little claustrophobic. Star Anise Boutique Capsules, however, are far from this throwing out the capsule hotel stereotype and really living up to their ‘Boutique’ name! We stayed a night in one of their Double Capsules and couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more!
Star Anise is right in the heart of the city within the financial Fort district making it just a 5 minute walk from the main train station or a 10/15 minutes from the main bus terminal and super easy to find! One street away from the refurbished Old Dutch Hospital which dates back to the Dutch colonial period in Sri Lanka but now holds upmarket restaurants, bars and boutique shops, Star Anise Boutique Capsules put you right where you want to be! You can explore the Fort area and its colonial charm as well as being a short tuk-tuk away from the hustle and bustle of Galle Face Green.
As you step into the room you are greeted by two levels of beds all hidden behind their own individual blinds but as soon as you roll one back you know you are in for a treat! The beds are exceptionally clean, new and modern with two big fluffy pillows just waiting to be melted into.
We’d arrived after three flights from India and completely missing a nights sleep so dropped into them immediately and well, the bed was legitimately the comfiest bed we have slept in in almost 13 months away from our own! There was another couple staying in one of the pods who didn’t get up until 2pm so we’re sure they found it equally as hard to drag themselves out of their pod!
There are three options for capsules; Single, Double or Premium. Take note that the single beds are one and a half size so if you’re deciding which to go for as a lone traveller, the single is definitely still big enough to spread out in! The Premium capsules are simply four single capsules in a room meaning you have a little more privacy or could book the whole room out as a group of friends!
The capsules themselves are where you really start to see the difference between your usual hostel bed and these boutique pods; each comes equipped with fresh white towels, clothes hangers, plugs, USB ports and a light inbuilt into the roof of the capsule…what more could you want!
Something else we loved was that although the capsules are obviously joined together you still feel like you have loads of space to spread out and relax as with a large floor area in between capsules and individual lockers under the beds its easy to unpack your bags and enjoy the room!
Sleek grey tiling greets you as you step foot into the modern en-suite bathroom which has a mixture of toilet and shower cubicles so there’s no waiting around or hustling to be the next person in the shower.
The showers are hot and powerful and the whole place is kept spotlessly clean throughout the day.
The Common Areas
As you walk through Star Anise you really get that small, boutique feel and it feels a little bit like a home away from home with an intimate cheerful lounge to relax in, an adjoining kitchen to make the most of and lots of sweet detailings.
With everything on one level it gives you an apartment like feel and is easy to navigate your way around. There’s an L-shaped sofa to recline on after a day exploring the sights of Colombo and a large plasma screen TV to just chill out with if that’s what you fancy.
The cosy feel makes it easy to meet your fellow capsule neighbours and yet it seems everyone is here for the same reason; the quiet atmosphere and comfortable sanctuary away from the city.
We absolutely love it when there is a fully functioning kitchen anywhere we stay and here was no different! It feels like a real treat after being on the road for so long to be able to cook whatever you want and with all the right equipment! At Star Anise there is everything you need to cook up some culinary delights if you’re not up for venturing out to explore the nearby restaurants.
The supermarket is also only a 2 minute walk away so its super convenient and it stocks pretty much everything you could want – so if like us you are looking for a bit of western flavour after 6 months in India, this is the perfect place! We treated ourselves to a huge bowl of pasta – much needed comfort food after a long few days travelling and a real craving we’d had for a while!
Head upstairs in Star Anise and you come out on a reasonably sized rooftop area equipped with a few stools, seats and a table which would be a perfect place to unwind with friends during the peak season or just a space to enjoy the fresh evening air!
For an added bonus its astro-turfed so no need to go downstairs and get your shoes, just dig your toes in and get comfy!
The prices at Star Anise are inevitably more than your everyday hostel but this place most definitely gives you much more through a unique and extremely comfortable stay. The double capsules are in a ten-bed dormitory priced at around £25 without breakfast and £30 with, the single beds are £18 with breakfast and the premium capsules in a four bed dormitory with breakfast for £19. These prices were taken during May which is classed as the off-season for Sri Lanka so prices may vary.
All in all we had a fantastic stay at Star Anise Boutique Capsules and would recommend it to anyone looking to start (or end!) their Sri Lanka stay in style. The staff here are super friendly and take pride in the hotel; they add to the atmosphere by keeping it fresh and friendly yet professional!
So, there’s only one thing left to say! Go and experience capsule life for yourselves!
You can book directly on the Star Anise website!
