Review – Lime & Co Kaba – Kabalana, Sri Lanka

Cosy Days at Lime & Co Kabalana

Lime & Co is the new ‘budget boutique’ offering from the already established Ceilao brand. Set along the sweeping Southern Sri Lankan coastline in a small village called Kabalana, Lime & Co is set back off the main road but still just a short walk to the famous Kabalana beach and Welengoda surf break. We spent two nights in one of their brand new Deluxe Double rooms and despite the weather – it rained for two days solid – we still managed to soak up some of the chic, calm atmosphere.

The Location

Situated next to Kataluwa train station, Lime & Co Kaba is positioned in between both Ahangama, boasting famous surf breaks, and Koggala which is home to one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the South Coast. You can easily catch a bus in either direction from the road just outside the villa and be at either destination in around five minutes.

The Villa

The Villa can be easy to miss but look out for the Lime & Co logo and the white tops of Ceilao Kabalana right next door. The Villa is nestled down a small side street giving peace and quiet away from the road and total privacy.

The building is actually two connecting villas which both play host to one Deluxe Double Room and two Twin Rooms. This makes it perfect for couples, friends or families looking to rent the whole thing.

The Villa is a bright sunny yellow, contrasted with modern concrete and touches of colonial style wood. Colourful plants run around the length of the villa putting it in the perfect leafy setting. We imagine with sunnier skies the garden would be a great place for sunbathing, lounging in the hammock or some outdoor dinners.

Each side of the property has shared kitchen facilities and a plunge pool for those hot humid days which we only wish we could have enjoyed here…we didn’t fancy the plunge in strong winds and torrential rain although Josh did try to persuade me it would be fun!

The Rooms

We stayed in the Deluxe Double room with attached bathroom which can be found on the bottom floor on either side of the villa.

The rooms are done in a minimalist, boho style with cushions a plenty, floors to make any tile lover leap and rustic finished bathrooms. A complete breath of fresh air compared to many of the other budget options in the area.

Lime & Co’s vision is eco-chic and this certainly comes out in the amazing recycled iron sink and beautiful heavy wood doors and tables dotted all around the villa.

The bed was super comfortable and something which adds ten bonus points to any stay for us was the addition of a steaming hot shower!

Kanteen Cafe

The Villa is completely self-contained and so is generally room only. There are plenty of shops in nearby Ahangama to buy ingredients and supplies to cook up a storm in the kitchenette.

Or, if you’re feeling a little lazy then┬ápop next door to the adjoining restaurant. Known as Kanteen Cafe currently but, we heard, soon to be getting a complete revamp serving up Sri Lankan classics but with a fusion feel.

The food here was delicious and in a setting reminiscent of Bali – we will definitely be returning to try its newly styled menu!

Breakfast is served between 7.30-10.30am, lunch 12.30-3pm and dinner 6.30-10pm.

The Verdict

Good budget places can be hard to come across in Sri Lanka with many not always giving you bang for your buck. Lime & Co Kaba however most certainly does. Its simple yet trendy, modern and provides everything you need for a fun stay on Sri Lanka’s surfing coast. Sadly, we couldn’t order a dose of sunshine but we bet this place looks even better in that hazy Sri Lankan sun.

We would like to thank Lime & Co Kaba for sponsoring our stay with them! As always, however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are totally honest and our own!
