Review – Captain Coconuts, Gili Air

Captain Coconuts is the perfect tropical hideaway on the beautiful little island of Gili Air. We came across Captain Coconuts whilst wandering through the palm lined paths that interlace all across Gili Air and, after poking our noses around inside, instantly fell in love with its vibe and unique style. After staying on Gili Meno for a few days we came back to check out everything Captain Coconuts had to offer! We stayed for two nights in one of their amazingly quaint ‘Joglo’ style bungalows and right from the off we could tell this place has been created with a lot of love, thought and attention to detail in mind.

The Location

Captain Coconuts is situated on the South West side of Gili Air or as its generally known ‘the sunset side’. As you can probably guess from the name this is where the majority of the island flocks each night to watch those spectacular Gili sunsets light up the sky. Captain Coconuts is on a small side street just a couple of minutes walk from the main stretch of beach which means you get the best of both worlds; its close enough to the action (and that famous Gili Air sea swing!) but far enough away that you aren’t going to be disturbed by the nightly beach parties which run here. From the sunset strip you can reach the popular eastern beach in around fifteen minutes and this is where you’ll find the classic Gili scene; sparkling white sand and water so crystal blue that it feels like you’re actually floating in a swimming pool – heavenly!

The Rooms

On first glance Captain Coconuts appears to be just five individual bungalows but a closer look reveals a large family villa as well as the impressive Bamboo House with an open air dormitory. With so many accommodation options in one place Captain Coconuts really caters to every kind of traveller from single backpackers and couples to families and groups!

Bungalows

The bungalows have been designed in the traditional Javanese ‘Joglo’ style each with a sweeping tiled roof and its own unique and beautifully hand crafted set of doors. Its these individual touches which whilst so simple give this place its natural and traditional feel; it slots in so perfectly with its natural surroundings and is the perfect accompaniment to the local village life just around the corner!

Inside the bungalows the effortlessly cool style continues; with fresh tiles and light colours giving the room a real airy and chic feel. So much so, that its hard not to instantly dive onto the four-poster bed and into all its fluffy pillows!

More colourful carved wooden doors and windows open up inside to the attached bathroom. This is where the attention to detail really comes to light; vintage tiles are scattered at the base of the shower and the copper sink on its intricately carved wooden base was complete interior decor inspiration. Safe to say we fell in love!

Other nice touches were the water cooler, kettle and complimentary tea and coffee which gave the bungalow a complete luxury feel even for its affordable price tag. Captain Coconuts runs completely free from plastic bottles so fill up in your room and help do your bit for the environment!

Oh, and who doesn’t love a tropical robe to relax in? We swanned around in them for most of the day and really didn’t want to leave them behind!

Bamboo House

The huge structure that sits at the back of Captain Coconuts is made completely of bamboo and is an impressive feat. At two stories high, it holds two huge dormitory style rooms with hanging beds. This is not just your average dormitory and offers travellers on a budget access to a completely unique experience. The beds hang from the ceiling and so as the cool tropical breeze drifts in from the open air sides it rocks you off to sleep with a calm floating sensation.

You are not completely open to the elements, however, as each bed comes with its own mosquito net, as well as a fan and locker.

The Bamboo House is a fantastic option for travellers who cannot afford the bungalow on their own but still have the chance to stay within this tranquil resort and use its modern and idyllic facilities.

The Breakfast

Each room option comes with a complimentary breakfast served in the CocoLoco cafe. Slide onto one of the wooden benches and wake up slowly with a choice of tea or coffee and either a vegetable omelette, buckwheat banana pancakes or apple pie oats…delicious. To reflect the cafes healthy vibes each are made with fresh, tasty ingredients and can be enjoyed overlooking the pool and gardens as the morning light begins to cut through the leafy palms.

Its a perfect wake up call and set us up right for the rest of the day!

The Poolside

The centre-point of Captain Coconuts is undoubtedly the pool and wooden decked area that surrounds it. Its a perfect place to soak up the rays which sweep over here all day long, take a refreshing dip, or shelter under the tall palm trees which grow all over the resort. Uniquely, the bungalows and bamboo house were built around the palms and plants that already existed on the land to attempt to keep its natural, earthy and undeniably tropical feel as much as possible…and we think its certainly worked!

The pool is strewn with cushions, loungers and umbrellas so that you can quite easily while away hours or even days here.

Leaving Captain Coconuts without feeling relaxed, refreshed and ultra healthy is just not an option!

The Cafe

Talking of health the CocoLoco cafe attached to Captain Coconuts is the ultimate whole food cafe. It seems to be still relatively undiscovered on the island but we’re sure as soon as the secret gets out CocoLoco will be packed to its bamboo rafters.

The menu has clearly been made with as much thought and passion as the accommodation and the food is real feel good, look good stuff. It has gluten free, dairy free and vegan options as well as being free from any MSG nasties.

Over our few days staying at Captain Coconuts we pretty much sampled everything on the menu and were not once disappointed.

Our top picks from the menu have to be the Salad Soul Bowl (65k IDR) with its fresh rainbow colours and to die for Asian dressing, the Vegan Lasagne (70k IDR) with its creamy cauliflower cheese and of course, the highly Instagrammable Smoothie Bowls (55k IDR) piled high with fresh fruits and nuts.

Oh and don’t miss the vegan nachos – they’re comfort food at its best and an absolute winner!

Its impossible to eat in the CocoLoco Cafe and not come away feeling wholly satisfied and healthy – a complete win win!

Spread the word – as this is surely the best health food cafe on Gili Air!

Verdict;

All in all Captain Coconuts is a beautifully unique and family run accommodation. It was the perfect place to unwind whilst still soaking up the culture, tradition and natural beauty of Gili Air. It has a completely relaxed vibe, that makes anyone feel welcome to come and enjoy what it has to offer both in terms of spending the night or just sampling some of the awesome menu at the cafe. That combined with its affordable price tag makes this place a fantastic choice for all types of travellers to indulge in their own little slice of wholesome luxury on Gili Air. We couldn’t recommend it more and will certainly be back in the future!
